Skala on fire
Fire behind Skala, would it creep over the hill to the hotel? Would the chums have to be
evacuated? Even the hotel staff were
worried.

Out of nowhere there was the sudden thundering of radial engines and the pair of water bombers came
over the hotel at about 100
feet. Everyone dived under their sunbeds as the planes circled across the beach to pick up water
less than a 100 yards off shore.
Just like WWII, they could have come straight out of a film

Every twenty minutes the pair came round again for about 2 hours. As the touch they water the pilot
hits fully throttle and the
engines roar as they scoop up the water. It is a delicate balance, pick up too much and the plane
crashes. Before now they've also
scooped up trippers. In fact the first time round they almost got a Brit on a Lilo.

All the electricity to Skala was burnt out, so it was a candle light evening across the village.
